BHS cross country opens with home meet

The Batesville High School Cross Country Team opened its 2026 season this morning by hosting the four-team Batesville Invitational. Despite the hot and muggy conditions, the storms held off, allowing the girls’ race to get underway approximately 10:30 a.m. Girls Take Team Championship The Bulldogs got off to a fantastic start, led by sophomore Ava Wade, who captured the individual title with a winning time of 20:36. She was followed closely by teammate and junior Jayla Bedel, who finished second overall in 20:44. Francesca Myers continued Batesville’s strong showing, crossing the finish line in 22:20 to place fourth overall and third for the Bulldogs. Caitlin Raver was close behind, finishing fifth in 22:31. Rounding out Batesville’s top seven were Paige Allgeier (23:20), Aubrey Weberding (23:49), and Audrey Dieckmann (23:54), who finished eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively. Senior Sydney Gilland narrowly missed the top 10, placing 11th in 24:23. With eight runners finishing in the top 11, the Bulldogs put together an impressive team performance, scoring just 19 points to claim the team championship. East Central finished second with 42 points. Boys fall just short to EC On the boys’ side, East Central claimed the team championship, edging Batesville by just five points, 35–40. South Ripley finished third with 53 points. The Bulldogs were led by junior Levi Essick and freshman Cael Lahman, who finished third and fourth overall. The two runners battled their way through the course just six seconds apart, with Essick crossing in 19:03 and Lahman in 19:09. Freshman Duncan Fish was Batesville’s third runner, placing 11th overall with a time of 20:26. The Bulldogs then had three runners cross in succession, securing 13th, 14th, and 15th places. Freshmen Luke Raver (21:04.2) and Rhett Gibson (21:04.8) battled all the way to the finish, separated by just six-tenths of a second. Senior Brody Gibson followed closely behind in 21:14. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ top seven was another freshman, Timothy Quillan, who placed 17th overall in 21:33. While the boys came up just five points short of East Central, the close team battle and strong performances from both the experienced upperclassmen and the freshman class provided plenty of positives to build on as the season gets underway.
